1 February 2018:
Teaching Tolerance and the Southern Poverty Law Center have announced the creation of HARD HISTORY: TEACHING AMERICAN SLAVERY.
This groundbreaking project aims to fundamentally transform and improve the teaching of American slavery in schools across the nation. It draws heavily from the third book in the Harvey Goldberg Series, Understanding and Teaching American Slavery.
There is a review of Understanding and Teaching the Cold War in the recent edition of Passport, published by the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations.
We almost lost track of the adjectives: formidable, significant, perceptive, valuable, compelling, important, rich, extensive, provocative.
“Professors and high school teachers committed to student learning will find that Understanding and Teaching the Cold War makes the difficult task of teaching the Cold War a little easier. It is a valuable contribution to the scholarship of teaching that deserves space on the bookshelf of new teachers who are developing initial Cold War courses as well as experienced faculty who are contemplating revisions to their existing courses. Very few readers will come away from this provocative compilation without the motivation to experiment with at least some of the ideas in it. It is highly recommended.”
The American Historian, February 2015
The Harvey Goldberg Series gives college and secondary history instructors a deeper understanding of the past as well as the tools to help them teach it creatively and effectively. Each volume focuses on a specific historical topic and offers a wealth of content and resources, providing concrete examples of how teachers can approach the subject in the classroom.
Named for Harvey Goldberg, a professor renowned for his history teaching at Oberlin College, Ohio State University, and the University of Wisconsin from the 1960s to the 1980s, the series reflects Goldberg’s commitment to helping students think critically about the past with the goal of creating a better future.
On this site you will be able to get information about current books in the Harvey Goldberg Series, future volumes, teaching resources for Series titles, and contact information for the Series Editors and the University of Wisconsin Press.
